Government House, located on Military Road is the private home of Newfoundland's lieutenant-governor, the queen’s representative in Newfoundland, and was built in the 1830s. The 20-acre site was chosen by Sir Thomas Cochrane, the governor in office from 1825 to 1834, and the exterior is composed of red sandstone, quarried from Signal Hill.
Myths say that the moat around Government House was built to keep out snakes, although Newfoundland is one of a handful of regions in the world that does not have snakes! The moat was actually designed to allow more light into the basement rooms.
Tours are not available, but the grounds are open for you to explore. Make sure you take time to visit the marvelous, colorful gardens onsite.
